Banked Transformer Practices

A banked transformer is usually one of a set of single-phase transformers interconnected to provide three phase service to a three phase load.  They may be in sets of two or three.  There are advantages to doing so instead of simply installing a single three phase transformer.  Perhaps a system is already in place and enough single phase transformers are available to do it at a cost savings.  But it is mainly a plus when encountering a failure of one of the three transformers.  The bank can be temporarily rewired to allow continued service while arranging for replacement of the failed transformer.  In this case, service will be restored and activities can continue, though only about 57.7% of the power of the normal installation will be available.  This restored service can be a big issue in some areas when power service might otherwise be completely down for longs periods of time. 

It is not an uncommon site to spot groups of three banked transformers mounted as a group on a power pole or a set of poles.  Initial costs for a set of new single phase transformers can be higher, and space occupied will be greater, but in rural areas,  and other places where ready replacement can be an issue, this is a very practical alternative.

 Transformers may also be ganged in order to supply higher voltages to special commercial, institutional, governmental, industrial and other similar locations where large amounts of power are needed.  In this case these ganged transformers will be often be wired to increase the amperage in multiples equivalent to the accumulated total of the amperages of the individual units.  Each will usually also be a three phase transformer.  In this case, they will be a form of pad mounted transformer and will incorporate special padmount switches and other devices for extra safety and convenience when doing inspections, servicing, monitoring and repair.  Especially large power distribution system installations also will have sets of banked transformers.

Banked Transformer Choices

It should also be pointed out that nothing prohibits use of many other transformer types than mentioned above from being installed in ganged transformer configurations.  Certainly, pretty much any transformer; step up, step down, pole mount, pad mount, toroid transformer, cast transformer, liquid filled transformer, etc. could be ganged for its own specific uses.  Especially, dry transformers are economical as banked transformers. They can be installed with a minimum of inconvenience and expense as to original cost and space taken up because they do not have to meet the more rigorous safety and environmental demands encountered when employing liquid transformers. Indoor installations particularly benefit for this reason.

Whatever your final choice, you should know that standards have improved.  New technologies and increased attention to efficiency of existing technologies has brought about  safer, more efficient, and new transformer advances meeting Energy Star recommendations and more stringent government codes.  If you are a large-volume user, you should check out the differences in energy savings you will get by a complete retrofit of older transformer equipment near its end of useful life.  You may encounter a significant enough financial incentive to install all new transformers.  Also, in order to receive the most benefit from new equipment, be sure to gather all the pertinent data you can to allow our staff to best fulfill your needs.  See the section on How to Select a TEMCo Transformer for some suggestions on what to write down.  Be sure to consult our experts so we can advise you of anything you may still need to know, especially if you have a custom situation to address.
